FAQ - Cradle
You can either click on a question to take
you directly to the answer or scroll through to read all of them.
1. I received my replacement handheld but
when I place it in the cradle, my PC doesn't detect it. How can I correct this?
If you have different versions of the software on your handheld and your desktop, the PC may not be able to detect your handheld.
On the handheld, scroll to Options>Status and click. In the O/S field, you will find the version of your handheld's software. Then, start the Desktop Manager and select Help>About. The About Desktop Manager window appears. Check the version of the desktop software recorded there.
If your handheld is running version 2.1 software and your desktop is running version 2.0 software, you will need to upgrade your desktop software. If you are using the BlackBerry Desktop Redirector, version 2.1 of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, or version 2.0 of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (with Service Pack 3), you can upgrade your desktop software. Contact your system administrator to find out the version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server which your company is using.
If the software versions on your handheld and desktop match but the PC still does not connect to the handheld, place the handheld in the cradle and start the Application Loader. By doing so, the software on your handheld will match to the software on your desktop. Back to top
2. My PC isn't detecting my handheld. How
can I correct this?
Try the following if your desktop cannot detect your handheld:
 | If the handheld is in the cradle and you have a password enabled, enter your password. |
 | Ensure that the handheld is properly connected to the cradle
and the cradle is properly connected to the serial port. |
 | To verify that the COM port is functioning properly, connect another serial device to it, such as a mouse. |
 | Disable any synchronization programs such as HotSync, TrueSync, or ActiveSync. You will also need to temporarily disable any anti-virus software that is running. Contact your IT department to check if you are running any software that scans the COM ports. If you are, it should be disabled. |
 | If you are using a laptop on a docking station, remove the laptop from the docking station. |
 | Confirm that the port settings are correct. In the desktop software, click Options>Serial Settings. Lower the serial speed to 9600. For Windows 2000, click Start menu and go to Settings>Control Panel>System>Device Manager and open the COM port. For Windows 95/98, click Start>Settings>Control Panel>Ports>Settings and open the COM port.
The standard port settings are:
 | Bits per second - 9600 |
 | Data Bits - 8 |
 | Parity - none |
 | Flow Control - xon/xoff |
|
 | Ensure that the BlackBerry software versions on the desktop and handheld match. On the handheld, scroll to Options>Status and click. In the O/S field, you will find the version of your handheld's software. Then, start the Desktop Manager and select Help>About. The About Desktop Manager window appears. Check the version of the desktop software recorded there.
If the software versions don't match, start the Application Loader to update the handheld's software. |
 | To isolate a cradle or port problem, try a different handheld in your cradle and a different cradle on your computer. Connect the cradle and handheld to a different computer. |
 | Contact your IT department to confirm that the settings in the BIOS on your PC are correct. Back to top |
